This is an extraordinarily playable spaceship-piloting game
This is an extraordinarily playable spaceship-piloting game. Very simple and easy to get into, whilst yet providing enough customisability and choice to justify the "open world" tag, it drew me in from the first five minutes and kept me completely immersed until the endgame. It has an easy learning curve, but it doesn't sacrifice complexity overmuch. Very pretty graphics and gratifying sound - the soundtrack, by the way, is PERFECT. And even if you don't like it, it has an amazing feature of being able to choose your own music, and assign it to different in-game scenarios. Reeeeeally nice touch. The story is quite an interesting one for sci-fi fans, and there is a surprising amount of speech/animation for a game at this price point - enough to make it a genuinely fun campaign. There is even replay value in the amount of choice in factions and weaponry. The only issue I have is that it's too short, in that the game initially hints at a large amount of content - ships; weapons; star systems, etc. and then simply makes these things very time-consuming to attain, and the end of the line- best ship; best weapons; final star system, happens a bit too soon, with the endgame lying on predictable lines from the progression set out on at the start. To sum up - extreme value for money here - just don't forget you're not playing an AAA title, like I did, and be disappointed that it ends too soon.

This was one of the most fun space-based games I played in recent history
This was one of the most fun space-based games I played in recent history... and I own/have played a LOT of space games. This is not exactly "space" sim as much as naval ship arcade-based action RPG, but it has the atmosphere, characters, and ship variety to keep things fresh. I clocked my 52.5 hours in a single play-through from start to finish, and yes, I did play this game for fun, so I did not rush past areas or just hop from mission to mission. I hunted for bounties, stopped raids, broke blockades, and... well... PLAY the damn game instead of just trying to get it over with. The game's unique take on broad-side combat, old-school battleship-style A la WWII, makes for a refreshing space experience that made me wonder why other space combat games did not adopt a similar format long ago. This is NOT an X3-equivalent space empire building sim, nor is it a hardcore rogue-like. It's simple a great single-player adventure with great combat mechanics and above-average story progression with TONS of polish and character. This is better than most AAA titles today. For the money, it's a steal at full price. On sale it's a MUST GET.
