I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. If Metroidvania, Platformer, Adventure is your thing, Hollow Knight delivers it without much filler. The pitch — The hand-drawn metroidvania that defines the genre. — is delivered without too much filler. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.

This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday. Hollow Knight leans hard into Metroidvania, Platformer, Adventure, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. It helps that the premise (The hand-drawn metroidvania that defines the genre.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. Worth it, especially on sale.
