Thanks to OpenStreetMap’s real-world data, you can choose any place in the world for your survivors. . . . Establish a new “Infection Free Zone” wherever you choose. Set up shelters and production facilities. Adapt existing buildings to new needs. Build new farms and power houses. Establish defenses with walls, gates, and towers. . . Utilize your knowledge of the city. What is the best place to defend? Where were the grocery stores, where were the pharmacies? Where would you look for weapons? Remember that it’s dangerous to search the old buildings, there might be some infected lurking in the dark! . . . Each night, your settlement might be attacked by large hordes of the infected. This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday. The Action, Sim, Strategy mix is what kept me playing; Infection Free Zone knows what it wants to be. On paper it is Choose any real region from the world. Choose your base of operations, then, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. Worth it, especially on sale.

It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. The Action, Sim, Strategy mix is what kept me playing; Infection Free Zone knows what it wants to be. The pitch — Choose any real region from the world. Choose your base of operations, then — is delivered without too much filler. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. I will be back for another run.
