I frankly feel stupid for not playing Vagante until now

I frankly feel stupid for not playing Vagante until now. As a member of the Barony team, I feel like Vagante is an excellent blend between Spelunky and Barony, with the addition of some meta-progression elements which do not break the all-important high-replayability "any run could be THE run" feel that keeps you coming back. Not to suggest the team is even aware of Barony, but rather the vicious enemies and traps, multiple unique playstyles to choose from, and co-op synergies, are cut from the same dungeon-party-inspired cloth. The level of polish in Vagante is also *chef's kiss* exceptional. The game manages to be brutally difficult without feeling cheap or inaccessible, which is a fantastic achievement. Vagante is dense with fun fights and boss battles, many of which you could either choose to bypass, or risk taking on for extra XP and gold, which you'll need to continue facing its increasing challenges. Each class has unique abilities, as well as a shared list of stat upgrades that all heroes have access to. The unique abilities make teamwork much more interesting, but even two characters of the same class can have different builds between them. But more importantly there are usually many ways to approach a problem: use an item, initiate a fight, cast a spell, throw a corpse -- you can feel genuinely creative as you play, which is the number one thing I love about roguelikes, and why complexity is an essential part of the roguelike game design recipe. I can tell by the playtimes of other reviewers that I'm just scratching the surface. I've seen 3 tilesets and have had a great time so far, eager to come back for more. Well done to Nuke Nine!

If you've been looking for life after Spelunky, this game is for you

If you've been looking for life after Spelunky, this game is for you. This has become my favorite roguelike in my library. I somehow have over 560 hours on record for this game over the course of its developement. This is an amazing rpg / action / platforming roguelike title that has kept me coming back for more over quite a bit of time. With online multiplayer, grab a friend and enjoy your misery together.

I would love to give this game a Mixed review if I could

I would love to give this game a Mixed review if I could. Yes, the roguelike elements are fantastic, the game is well-balanced to a fault, and it's genuinely fun. However, most of the bosses are absolutely painful to fight, particularly the Mushroom Golem and the Abomination. If your best option when fighting a boss is to facetank three projectiles that each do a fourth of your health, it's not a very well-designed boss. Plus, as others have mentioned, the game has a strange obsession with insta-kill mechanics. Boulders, Spikes, Golems, the Mushroom Golem, infinite pits, those weird flying things that drop rocks on your head, Golems that jump like frogs and curve towards you on the way down... It's just too much. I guess Boulder Protection is there for a reason, but it shouldn't be required to get through The Rift. Even then, the final boss is just awful. You have two options when you walk into the boss room. Option A is using either freeze spells or a fast weapon with Freezing or Shocking capabilities to stunlock the boss and immediately end the fight. Option B is to get stomped by a myriad of poorly telegraphed attacks, some of which (like the lightning) feel genuinely impossible to dodge without multiple jumps. Again, this game is genuinely fun and the multiplayer is really good, but it is very flawed.
