A friend recommended it and I owe them one

A friend recommended it and I owe them one. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition Deluxe (2009) leans hard into Action, RPG, Adventure, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. It helps that the premise (PUBLISHER UPDATE - This is the product page for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.

There is a good game buried in here somewhere

There is a good game buried in here somewhere. Fans of Action, RPG, Adventure will recognise the pieces, though The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition Deluxe (2009) never quite assembles them. What it promises (PUBLISHER UPDATE - This is the product page for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) is more interesting than what it actually does moment to moment. Too many systems are introduced and then abandoned. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. Not for everyone, and not for me.

Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks

Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. The Action, RPG, Adventure mix is what kept me playing; The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition Deluxe (2009) knows what it wants to be. On paper it is PUBLISHER UPDATE - This is the product page for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
