It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. The Platformer, Story, Pixel mix is what kept me playing; Celeste knows what it wants to be. On paper it is Precision platforming with a heart as big as its challenge., and for once the game mostly lives up to that. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. Worth it, especially on sale.

I wanted to love this, but it never quite got its hooks into me. The Platformer, Story, Pixel side of Celeste is fine on paper, but the execution felt thin after the first few hours. What it promises (Precision platforming with a heart as big as its challenge.) is more interesting than what it actually does moment to moment. It asks for a lot of grinding before the interesting parts show up. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. Try before you buy.

I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. Celeste leans hard into Platformer, Story, Pixel, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. It helps that the premise (Precision platforming with a heart as big as its challenge.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. I will be back for another run.
