I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed
I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. Subnautica leans hard into Survival, Adventure, Story, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. It helps that the premise (The underwater survival game with genuine leviathan dread.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. I will be back for another run.

Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. Subnautica leans hard into Survival, Adventure, Story, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. The pitch — The underwater survival game with genuine leviathan dread. — is delivered without too much filler. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. I will be back for another run.

The pitch — The underwater survival game with genuine leviathan dread. — is delivered without too much filler. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. I will be back for another run.
