Most of the negative reviews will come from disappointed fans of the first game

Most of the negative reviews will come from disappointed fans of the first game. Positive Changes: - The core casting mechanics are actually faster and less clunky - Graphics have been improved - Controller casting system has been re-designed and is infinitely better compared to the first game - The whole game feels a lot smoother Neutral Changes: - No more spamming 5-rock spells that will carry you through the whole campaign - You can't have 3 simplistic element combinations last you the whole game anymore Negative Changes: - The game has been significantly downscaled compared to the first one. - Less magicks, enemies, levels, items and DLC - Magicks (ready made spells) are no longer spammable - Even if you muscle-memory the magick command you are still limited by the 3 second cooldown You will find a lot of self-proclaimed magicka 1 gurus hating the neutral changes after discovering that their old methods are no longer as viable, and their playstyle must be adapted. That's fair, but the thumbnail does advertise "learn to spell again". The game will not be any less enjoyable to new players because of this. Starting with the 2nd title and coming back to the first one is a great way to experience and appreciate both for what they are. Casting a mediocre sword-enchantment + a shield and claiming the game is boring because that's the only viable playstyle you bothered to discover after the 5-rock projectile and magick spamming nerf does little justice to the title. Coming from the first title and expecting to get by with the same cheap strategies may leave initially disappointed, but it will make your playstyle evolve. Whether you are willing and patient enough to allow that to happen is your personal business.

The game has been updated since it's initial release

The game has been updated since it's initial release. They brought back rebindable keys, and the old spell and movement system. Steam and Ice are their own element, as well as adding a new element, poison to change up the balance of the game without negating the old balance altogether. The Jokes are funnier than ever, the multiplayer is better than ever (you can drop in and out). The campaign is a little weak, but it really is Magicka 2.0. If this was the game that had come out instead of the original version released in May, then nobody would be complaining as much as they were. I still don't think it personally holds a candle to the epic scale of the original campaign, but it is definetly a solid product overall. Update: They just keep updating it. You can ping for revives (though you should be using voice chat anyways), they added two new magicks (teleport and thunderbolt), They made it easier to differentiate new enemies, they made ice and earth armor have "no knockdown" like in Magicka 1. Most of all, these changes signify they're in it for the long haul. They want to make this game as well-loved as the original and are willing to do whatever is necessary to make it that way. I expect the campaign won't get any additional levels, but there's going to be a lot of long term support for this game and it won't just be DLC made to milk us. They're taking care of the community before anything else, which I think is awesome.
