I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed
I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. The Shooter, Action, Horror mix is what kept me playing; Hunt: Showdown 1896 knows what it wants to be. It helps that the premise (Extraction shooting where every sound is a decision.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. I will be back for another run.

It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. If Shooter, Action, Horror is your thing, Hunt: Showdown 1896 delivers it without much filler. The pitch — Extraction shooting where every sound is a decision. — is delivered without too much filler. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. Worth it, especially on sale.
