It was fun for a bit, but it just doesn't stack up

It was fun for a bit, but it just doesn't stack up. There are some interesting mechanics with the light and curses you accumulate, but there is very little to encourage you to keep going. Having finished the short and mediums of all 3 temples and with a few attempts on the longs, I'm ready to put it away. There's a few problems. The combat is solid enough, but there is no story whatsoever. Don't play expecting Hades, ready to tease out every nuance interacting with your favourite characters. You just die, and begin anew, and it can be quite a slog to start again because of the lack of variation. Aside from 3 blessings you can equip, there isn't enough to make you feel more powerful and progress. Sure, you can unlock more weapons, and have more options randomized before you depart. But it also just dilutes your pool of weapons, and you can't filter them out later. There isn't an incremental increase in your health, damage, or lives or whatever, so you're at the whim of what you pick up. It's not the dungeons that typically kill you, it's the bosses. Unfortunately, you'll be spending like 95% of your playtime working through trash mobs. It gets very samey samey very quick. So currently I'm "stuck" on the long temples, because I've met them a few times, but they'll completely obliterate you. I know the point is to learn their attacks and develop your strategy, but that's a big ask when I have to spend 30-45 minutes to reach them again, for a brief fight I'll probably lose. Simply put, every time I'm dumped unceremoniously back to the start, I don't feel fulfilled or ready to tackle another run. Once the sheen wears off, I suspect many might feel the same.

The game is fun

The game is fun. I enjoy the curse mechanic. That feels new and cool. I also enjoy the combat. It is very fluid and feels good to play. I liked the room structure, how it was like many rooms with traps and different sections with enemies. That also felt new and it was awesome. But there is one glaring issue that I just can't overlook. Many of the weapons are somewhat useless in longer runs. They are terrible against groups of elite enemies, which makes them absolutely useless in some of the later levels. Because of this, players are incentivised to use only the weapons that work. I would expect, in a rogue-like game, that I can have a lot of variety in my gameplay styles, but I wasn't really seeing much of that at all. Most builds were not viable in the later stages of the game. I really wanted to use some of the neat-sounding combo effects that some of the other weapons had on them, only to learn that playing that way actually just makes the game unnecessarily difficult, and I could just run one of the good weapons with a terrible passive effect that wins every single time. Essentially, there are many choices but most choices are undesirable - the opposite of what I would expect from a roguelike game. For that reason, I don't recommend this game.
