Worth every hour

Crawl can be a great, even amazing, split-screen local multiplayer game with one caveat: you need the right group of people for it, because Crawl is definitely not for everyone. It's a fast paced game which could be described as a competitive multiplayer dungeon crawl. One player is the hero, who attempts to kill monsters, get gold, buy items and defeat the boss to escape the dungeons. The other players? They play the monsters. The gimmick is that when one of the monster players kills the adventurer, they swap roles and thus everyone keeps going around in circles until someone is finally strong enough to kill the boss. In many games this might mean the monsters are just downtime between turns getting to be the hero, but not so in Crawl. The monster gameplay is quite in depth with each player being able to level up their stable of hand picked monsters, activate traps and so on. I personally probably prefer being the monsters to being the adventurer! Of course not everyone will like this confrontational and increasingly high stress gameplay, and those who don't will probably hate Crawl. Otherwise what you have here is a unique, amazingly good looking and sounding multiplayer game which has tons of content and will keep challening players for ages. Even lonely players can have fun with bots, who are perhaps even a bit too challenging.
