Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the 2025 shock — a Belle Époque turn-based RPG where a painted number kills everyone of that age each year.
I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. If RPG, Story, Tactics is your thing, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 delivers it without much filler. The pitch — The turn-based RPG that came from nowhere to sweep awards. — is delivered without too much filler. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. Worth it, especially on sale.
It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 wears its RPG, Story, Tactics influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. It helps that the premise (The turn-based RPG that came from nowhere to sweep awards.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
