Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free. You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name. Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga! Key Features:. Original (320x240) graphics and upgraded “HD” graphics . Remastered music as well as the original soundtrack . Mix-and-match new/old artwork and
Cave Story is a great game that you should not buy. The only versions you can spend money on are published by Nicalis, who strongarmed the original developer into a contract that gives him very little. Not to mention Nicalis taking down completely legal forks of the original open source free version and also abandoning this version of the game for the Switch version. If you already have this version because of a Humble Bundle or something then grab doukutsu-rs to improve it. If you don't, then grab the freeware version and use doukutsu-rs with it. EDIT: I kinda hate to be earning steam points for this review as it just feels like profiting at Pixel's expense. I really wish there was a way to disable that. Also edited my review since Pixel does apparently get royalties, they're just not NEARLY enough to be considered reasonable. EDIT 2: Now they've removed native linux support. ♥♥♥♥ you, give Pixel his game back. This is pathetic.
Do not buy this from Nicalis. At this point any games that have come under their publishing they've gone out of their way to basically claim ownership of the development as well. While previously they had at very least allowed for the continued distribution of the original Free-ware version of Cavestory and its fan-base driven translations, they are now issuing DMCA to take down the original versions. This is essentially destroying a core piece of independent game development history while also further erasing the actual developers from their hard work. Do not support Nicalis, do not buy this version of Cavestory or anything under their name. Support Studio Pixel by buying Kero Blaster, its a great and simple platformer much more deserving of your attention.
This game is EXELLENT! The controls are tight and responsive, the art is gorgeus (original and updated) and the music is fantastic! The Original and remastered are the best, in my opinion. To be honest I prefer the original soundtrack, but that's just me. The abiblity to "mash up" music and art is great. You can do original art with updated music or vise versa. You have 3 different versions of an amazing soundtrack! The story of the game is phenoninal and full of twists and turns, order a truckload of tissues before playing...you'll need it! The ride of this emotional roller coaster of a game is INTENSE, and with 3 endings It doesn;t get old quickly. To be honest after completing the game you might return even though you saw everything. It's just one of those games you keep coming back to for the same reason a book or a movue: a well made plot. It's a 10/10 alright!
