I bounced off it twice before finally giving up. The RPG, Adventure, Story side of Avowed is fine on paper, but the execution felt thin after the first few hours. What it promises (First-person fantasy RPG in the Pillars of Eternity world.) is more interesting than what it actually does moment to moment. The pacing sags in the middle third and never fully recovers. There is more content here than the price suggests. Try before you buy.

A friend recommended it and I owe them one. If RPG, Adventure, Story is your thing, Avowed delivers it without much filler. It helps that the premise (First-person fantasy RPG in the Pillars of Eternity world.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. There is more content here than the price suggests. I will be back for another run.

It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. Avowed wears its RPG, Adventure, Story influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. The pitch — First-person fantasy RPG in the Pillars of Eternity world. — is delivered without too much filler. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
