6About The Rewinder
The Rewinder Series. . About the Game. The Rewinder is a 2D puzzle adventure game inspired by traditional Chinese folklore. The game uses pixel art to mimic the aesthetics of Chinese ink paintings. Players will get to meet mythological figures such as the Spirit Wardens, the Ox-head and Horse-face Guardians of the Beyond, and the Tudi Gong (Keeper of the Land). The player takes on the role of Yun, a "rewinder" who has the ability to enter people's memories and influence their actions. By utilizing "senses" and swaying others' "intentions", he can change history. At the request of the Spirit Wardens, Yun goes to a small village to investigate why a spirit couldn't be reincarnated. The once thriving village has been deserted and filled with resentful spirits, leaving one woman alone in the teahouse. Who's she waiting for? Where did all the other villagers go? What really happened seven years ago?

Easy recommendation
I started playing this game with big expectations after reading some reviews, but in the end it didn't quite match them. The cultural setting, story and details are easily the best things about this game, but they are also a missed opportunity, because the game doesn't really get you to interact with the world as much is it could, so they stay mostly in the background. The puzzles are 90% minigames, some quite annoying for adventure gamers who don't care about being fast with their mouse, but they do make sense in the story. They best puzzles are the Rewinder ones, where you can alter past events, but they are too few. The game is quite short at around 5h, which are mostly used on mini games, so you don't get to spend sufficient time interacting with the characters, contributing to their story, which is the mark of the best adventure games, like the Blackwell series, which has a similar tone and theme (help ghosts find the light) but a much more interactive story. These are the reasons why I would get this game on discount and hope for a better sequel. PS. It's really worth gathering all the flowers for the final scene, but I would have liked to have more information about the mythology and ecology of flowers, and their role in the story which seems to not amount to more that just another puzzle.

I really wanted to like this game, and I finished it, but in the end I can't recommend it
I really wanted to like this game, and I finished it, but in the end I can't recommend it. The settings are very pretty, and the writing is detailed and well fleshed out. The overall story started out interesting but by the end I can honestly say I have no idea what happened or how it all fits together. The main negative for me though is that the gameplay is mostly not interesting. It is disjointed and the puzzles come in several varieties that feel like they belong to different games. The most fun parts of the game are when you travel into other people's memories and alter them to change history. Unfortunately that's just a small part of the overall game. The rest are mostly tedious classic puzzles like magic squares, count on an abacus, etc. There are one or two fetch quests that are amusing, but they don't fit into the rest of the story very well. There are some "action" sequences that are just annoying. I really do look forward to playing whatever the developers make next. This was a near miss of a game that could have been great but ended up mostly tedious.

A beautiful, interesting game perfect for anyone who likes point-and-click adventures
A beautiful, interesting game perfect for anyone who likes point-and-click adventures. The soundtrack and visuals were wonderful and well-polished, and the story was nice with a few sweet surprises. Nothing feels out-of-place or frustrating - everything fits well together, and the Chinese focus is refreshing and interesting. Don't pass this up; you won't regret it.
