Short but sweet RPG Maker ADV style of game with a lot of dialogue, in the vein of other "classics" like Mad Father, Ib and the likes. Not going to delve much deeply into the story but it has the components of a nice fairy tale, with all the bittersweet feelings and melancholy/longing common of the setting. (As if the title doesn't give away those vibes). On the technical side, you can pretty much run it on any toaster. Hit F4 to activate full screen as it's a pixel art based game so the internal resolution is small. Nothing to suffer about, everything looks neat and clean. The character art is beautiful and cute and that's a huge plus. Loads of tales and different youkai/ghosts/paranormal mix in here and the translation does give you some quick hints in parenthesis (given how much folklore is involved, it's welcomed to know the meanings) and although at times it'll remind you of extremely literal translations I don't mind it at all, considering the setting is the Japanese inaka, aka, the rural setting and small towns. The downside is that the version of RPG Maker used does not seem to support the Steam Overlay so it's not possible to take screenshots easily. (You can use the same trick used on many others of its kind by generating a folder and manually taking and uploading screenshots, it's a pain but worth if for those wanting to document their journey.) Overall, art, music, the storyline they all combine into a pleasant journey that actually left me aching for more. The endings may disappoint a few but I appreciate they had the courtesy of letting you choose to view them from a save point instead of padding and forcing a replay. Very recommended and even at base price it's a steal, and if you are one of those 100% hunters, you get an easy 100% to boot, heh.
Tales of the Black Forest is a RPG maker story game about a journey with yokai, time travel and facing the traumatic past. The game plays out like an adventure with some horror elements. In a game like this, the main focus is the story, but that's where I found it inconsistent and weak. The first two chapters aren't engaging and they last for 3.5 hours, I found myself taking a break after each of the two chapters. Luckily chapter 3 and the right ending have some interesting parts when the main plot finally comes back in the spotlight. There are heavy themes being presented such as a suicide, religious cult, manipulating a minor to carry out a terrorist attack. But due to the pacing, not all of them are hard hitting. From a gameplay point of view, the game works great. It provides arrows or text on what item/character you need to interact with to progress. There are sneaking and escaping scenes that come with an autosave and one last autosave is given at the ending branching point. If you are rushing through the game and miss out on information in an earlier part that you need to progress, you will have to load a previous save or consult the guide. Both the graphical presentation and the music do a great job at creating the right atmosphere. There are cute interactions and animations to enrich the experience, the effort shows here. The art is quite beautiful too and the game has cats and a cat cafe in chapter 2. For achievement hunters: There are missables for interacting with the characters after each chapter and for getting both endings.
Although there are poor operation, decryption is too mild problems, but the flaws do not cover the merits, "Tales of the Black Forest" to its proper atmosphere, excellent story, rich in deep story, it is destined to be a pixel RPG excellent work. It's more expensive than other lottery tickets, but it's worth it, and you're sure to feel the joy of the original Pixel RPG.
