Better than expected
I almost didn’t buy this game because of all the negative reviews and the fact that I really trust the community when it comes to their honest feedback of a game … however. I feel like I need to defend this game somewhat as I think its pretty sweet. After reading the reviews I can’t help but think that people have got the wrong idea about this game. It ISN’T a city builder game, so if that’s what you’re after it isn’t for you. The clue is in the name; it’s a survival game. This means that you can’t go around slapping down domes and building all the fun stuff like casinos, bars, or all your favourite looking buildings. It takes a lot of strategy to play this game and it’s hard. Again, the clue is in the name “Surviving Mars”. To make this game fun you have to understand this and you have to play knowing that your resources are limited. You have to build smart at first and only build things that are absolutely necessary. Then honestly, it’s a fun game. I know there are a lot of complaints about bugs, which I haven’t come across yet, though I have noted that there have been several patches between it’s release and now ( I bought the game on 3rd June 2018), so maybe that needs to be taken into account. Also I got this game half price. One of the fun things about this game is all the choices at the beginning, as you get to choose your sponsor (be it Russia, China, Europe etc) which all give a slightly different play style. If you enjoy a challenging survival game in the form of a city builder then this game is for you.

Frustrating more than fun
Classic Paradox Interactive: release a half decent game concept as a full fledged game, then rake in the money from DLCs which actually complete the original game concept. Don't buy the game unless you plan on investing in the DLC, also. Playing the vanilla game felt tedious and pointless. With Green Planet, at least, there is a purpose - working toward terraforming Mars. That makes it a bit more enjoyable, but you're probably better off to wait a year or two until they're done releasing content for this game so you can buy it all in a cheap Steam sale pack.

I've had a lot of fun with this game
I've had a lot of fun with this game. It's been great. Until now. With this latest free update, they've introduced a bunch of new bugs into the base game, independent of the DLC. I was already salty about the in-dome buildings pack, what was not long ago a community member's mod, becoming a paid DLC that wasn't included in the Season Pass, but now there's another new DLC, this one a big expansion, AND STILL NOT INCLUDED IN THE SEASON PASS. If I buy a season pass, I expect to get future DLC, damnit! This is something I'd expect from Wildcard! This is on top of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that was making the Stellaris Dome Pack paid DLC when originally it was just something you got if you owned Stellaris as well. This is a piss-poor start for Abstraction Games. I'll take part of this back when the bugs are fixed.
