There isn't much to do here; no fighting, no inventory , and no puzzles to solve. There are no dialogue options or plot twists to unravel. Instead, you'll be simply walking through the entire game. So, why does it earn a 10/10 rating from me? It's hard to put into words. There’s something mesmerizing about this place. At start, as I wandered across the platform, listening to the cries of seagulls and the rhythmic crashing of waves, accompanied by industrial noises in the background, I could almost smell the sea with the scent of oil in the air. The creators crafted a realistic representation of the oil rig's facilities — a secret world that most of us will never experience in real life. By the time the horror struck, I was deeply engrossed in the place, understanding Scottish accent as if I had spent years working there. In that heightened state of mind, horror hits with a profound intensity. The abnormal, blatant, yet haunting kind of horror, the monstrous and supernatural dread that seeps right into your bones and mind. This experience, I dare to say, would have been weakened by typical gameplay elements like combat, puzzles, or dialogue options. Still Wakes the Deep stands as a prime example of why the walking simulator genre holds a unique value in gaming industry.
It's The Thing on an oil rig with Scottish people speaking in tongues so intensely you'll need the subtitles to make heads or tails of it. What's not to love, really? Subtitles: buy it.
