Rust is the most honest survival game: naked on a beach, everything you build can be taken, and the neighbours are the real boss fight.
There is a good game buried in here somewhere. Rust promises a lot with its Survival, Multiplayer, Open World setup, but the loop wore thin quickly. The idea (Brutal multiplayer survival where trust is the rarest resource.) is there, but the execution never catches up to it. Too many systems are introduced and then abandoned. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. Wait for a deep sale.
Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. Rust wears its Survival, Multiplayer, Open World influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. The pitch — Brutal multiplayer survival where trust is the rarest resource. — is delivered without too much filler. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. Easy recommend at full price.
A friend recommended it and I owe them one. If Survival, Multiplayer, Open World is your thing, Rust delivers it without much filler. It helps that the premise (Brutal multiplayer survival where trust is the rarest resource.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. Worth it, especially on sale.
