Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror. With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly
Risen 2 is a good RPG taking place in a convincing caribbean setting with lots of interesting places to explore. As being expected from the developer of gothic/risen, Piranha Bytes managed to create a very atmospheric world which is one of the best points of the game. In contrast to its predecessor Risen 1 the game doesn't feature pure magic classes anymore which at first might frighten some people, especially hardcore gothic/risen(1) fans. But at a closer look it blends in quite nicely and offers some variety. The story is very straighforward, so don't expect unforeseeable surprises. On the negative site one has to point out the fact, that the balancing of the different weapons is not ideal. For example one shouldn't focus on the spear because it is very weak in comparison to blades. The fighting system itself is "ok" and offers quite a few choices later on in the game. Nevertheless it feels clunky at times (i.e. animations out of sync) and doesn't offer upgradeable combos for specific weapons (such as in gothic 1 & 2). All in all I was very sceptical at first, but the game convinced me otherwise. It offered a lot of immersion because of its beautiful, not generic designed world. If you can overlook some balancing problems and read through a guide which tells you which weapons are viable, RPG fans can't go wrong with buying this game. the pros and cons at a glance: pros: - graphics & performance (even for very very old pcs!) - atmosphere - level design / world - vodoo quests neutral: - story - enemy AI (sometimes very easy to abuse) - music (nothing special) - fighting system cons: - character animations - skill/weapon balancing
A great but flawed game. The game starts very slow and combat feels a bit underwhelming, but if you stick out the first few hours, the game just climbs in fun factor and epicness. By the time you get a musket, you are in heaven, blasting monsters in a hail of black gunpowder smoke. Overall, I liked this game, and half way through, loved it. It is one of those games that grows on you.
After starting this game twice and giving up twice, I decided to give it one last chance to see if I could get into it and I'm very glad I did. This game has an amazing atmosphere and exploration and there is loads of quests, islands to explore and things to do. The story is good if a little cheesy at times and most of the characters are interesting. The combat is clunky and very simplistic which is what put me off the game to begin with, but once you unlock more skills like parry and heavy attack, and once you get used to it you wont find it anywhere near as bad as you might think at first. If you go in expecting AAA polish and the very best design and animations then you will probably feel disappointed, but if you go in expecting a fun (if a little flawed) AA RPG then you will be more than happy. The game has issues but that doesn't change the fact that its very fun to play. Overall I strongly recommend this game to any RPG / Pirate fans that want a fun ~50 hour experience.
