There's good in this game, (ironically enough) there's no doubting that. But personally, I would recommend skipping Overlord 1 and going straight to Overlord 2. Having played several hours of Overlord 2 on the PS3, I can safely say that everything in this game is far, FAR more refined in it's sequel. Best of all, Overlord 2 actually has a map. Beyond that, the spells are much more interesting and the Domination/Destruction mechanic is Much better than the Good/Evil mechanic in this game. Play this if you want to see how the series started, but get ready for quite a bit of clunkyness.
Only 10hrs in, and this game is a great casual. Story is rather weak, though the atmosphere is entertaining, with fun gameplay I've never seen before using simple mechanics. If you liked Witcher 1, you'll probably like this. It has that same breathe of fresh air missing in games. Also switched to controller for the last hr n half - MUCH better experience than kbm IMO. Can't wait to beat it and play the 2nd game!
