Do like the game? Yes Do i recommend it? Not at it´s current state. The devs need to change a couple of things before the game can be fully enjoyed: 1. Sound mixing: altough the guns sound meaty, the voice volume need to be increased and the environmental audio needs to be fixed ( On the second mission, debris falls from the ceiling and makes zero sound ). 2. The plasma gun/rocket launcher spam on side missions: I know that plasma weapons are supposed to be OP in 40K, but currently they are just broken by being full-auto, these weapons just melt you in the amounts that spawn. I know there are full-auto plasma guns, but those are used by the Death Watch, not some hive gangers. 3. Infinite respawning enemies: i get it you need to respawn enemies as you move forward or for story reasons (chapter 3 comes to mind) but do not make them spawn behind you in a linear level like the train or just keep spawning them every 5 seconds. I actively avoid psycher rescue missions because of this. You´re a normal human, not a space marine or inquisitor with access to the best armor and shielding the imperium can produce that can take on entire armies single handedly. 4.Remove the ghosting effect wehn viewing weapons and on some game geometry. Even tough the game nails the Warhammer 40K aesthetic and the devs clearly know what makes this universe tick, i cannot recommend the game until these problems are solved. After the first round of patching i´ll change my review.
I recommend that very specific people purchase this game, because it's exactly the game Streumon has wanted to make. If you have a casual interest in Warhammer 40k and want to see a Hive World from the inside or get a way-too-close look at a tech priest, get this game. If you want a well put together shooter with a lot of guns, freedom of movement, and upgrade mechanics, there are already a ton out there that are more polished than this. Necromunda: Hired Gun is not an exceptionally well-made game. The animation is pretty spotty at times, the voice acting is alright, the music is good enough, the plot exists, and the gunplay is fine. It has its share of bugs at the moment (a few days after release,) but I personally haven't run into anything too weird. Edit: After the first patch (when the game version stopped showing .58 and started showing 1.5 on the main menu, not sure if that was just me or everyone,) a lot of the takedown animations look much better and the game seems to run more smoothly. HOWEVER! The sound design is solid, the visuals nail Warhammer 40k, and you can pet the dog. My computer was a pretty good gaming rig six years ago, and it's handling the game on High without issue. If you played Streumon's EYE: Divine Cybermancy years ago and thought "this is just a janky knockoff of Warhammer 40k's universe," this game is just EYE with the Warhammer 40k license and some of the wrinkles smoothed out. I've enjoyed it.
Wallrunning, grappling hooks and glory kills. Got your attention yet? Good! Streum On Studio doesn't make the most polished games ever, but their stuff always oozes heart and soul, and Necromunda: Hired Gun is no exception. This is a movement shooter that's mostly concerned with delivering a fun campaign set in the Warhammer 40k universe, and so far, I haven't been disappointed. Guns feel powerful (they tear off people's limbs willy-nilly) and the movement system is great, especially once you do the second mission where you get a grappling hook and have a double jump ability in addition to being able to wallrun from the get go. Graphically it doesn't look super hot, but the art department did an amazing job conveying the crazy scale of 40k. The soundtrack is nice and the voices can be a mixed bag but I'm kinda used to that in this sort of title. Performance varies between amazing and not so great at times (FPS drops aren't super frequent but they happen from time to time). If you have an RTX card you can use DLSS for some extra oomph. Overall, a really fun experience so far, hopefully it'll stay that way for the duration of the game.
