The game that started the Metal Slug series
The game that started the Metal Slug series... If I remember reading it somewhere, Metal Slug was supposed to be: 1) A game similar to, but much easier than Contra - you don't die just by physical contact with enemy soldiers ---> you obviously will if they knife you though ---> you can knife them enemy soldiers to save ammo too - you don't die just by physical contact with enemy vehicles --->you obviously will if they drive over you or you get shot by a tank cannon.. 2) to have the comedy lacking in Contra -- you bomb a toilet stall. The terrified soldier within flushes himself away to safety...Wait, what? -- a big enough explosion in some parts of the game will launch some soldiers towards the 4th wall (aka towards the camera, or you, the player) 3) main difference with Contra, you get to ride a vehicle! -- aka the namesake tank known as Metal Slug -- run over enemy soldiers !! -- drive over and crush innocent, unsuspecting cars !! -- bomb enemies with the tank cannon !! -- unlimited tank machine gun !! -- self-destruct the Metal Slug if you wish !! -- the only tank that can jump !! (albeit a small jump)

Metal Slug is fantastic
Metal Slug is fantastic. It's one of those games I can start and finish in one sitting and not realize how time passed. It's "Commando" with a pseudo-WW2 aesthetic, it's side-scrolling shoot em up at its finest. I've beaten it a million times, it holds up wonderfully from every possible angle. But. BUT. The port. The bloody port. It's not unplayable, but it's not great. Slowdowns, particularly in sound and music, plus irregular input latency make this port so very, very disappointing. Also, by 2015 I'd hope that widescreen wouldn't mean stretching; if you can't do proper widescreen (for perfectly valid reasons, I don't argue that), lock it at 4:3. I mean, "SETTINGS" is on the bloody features! Those settings include Fullscreen, Scanlines, Bilinear filtering and aspect ratio; pretty much everything you'd find in a standard emulator from fifteen years ago. I'd consider letting it pass; but this is the second port from Dotemu I've played that's very shoddy and was never fixed. The thing is, if MAME can emulate the game better, then what's the point? The regular price for this is 8 Euros? Piss.Off.

A classic side scroller shoot em up, I recommend it to everyone that has a love for old games. I remember playing metal slug on arcade machines. Now after buying the game I can continue without inserting a coin after I died! yay This game has earned a place in my heart.
