About Gorogoa

Winner of Debut Game at the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards, as well as Best Mobile Game and the Innovation Award at the GDC 2018 Choice Awards, Gorogoa is an elegant evolution of the puzzle genre, told through a beautifully hand-drawn story designed and illustrated by Jason Roberts. UNIQUELY IMAGINATIVE PUZZLES The gameplay of Gorogoa is wholly original, comprised of lavishly illustrated panels that players arrange and combine in imaginative ways to solve puzzles. Impeccably simple, yet satisfyingly complex. GORGEOUSLY HAND-DRAWN GAMEPLAY Jason Roberts created thousands of meticulously detailed hand-drawn illustrations, encompassing the impressive scope of Gorogoa's personal narrative. A NEW KIND OF STORYTELLING Gorogoa isn't just a game - it's a work of art, expressing itself through soulful, charming illustrations and distinguished puzzle mechanics.

Worth every hour

The core design idea of Gorogoa is so incredibly strong and well-executed that the rest doesn't really matter all that much. You get a square screen broken into four sections, each of which features an image that you often can zoom in to, out of, move, or break into layers. Your goal is to guide the main character across multiple scenes (lives?) by changing perspective and fitting different images together. That's it. And it's absolutely brilliant. The game is elevated above being a simple clever puzzle by wrapping its beautiful mechanics into a Buddhist (Induist?) narrative, showing the character across multiple lives and emphasizing that the world itself is structured like a fractal, with something as insignificant and mundane as a lamp or an apple hiding a whole new universe inside. The idea, while nothing new, sings perfectly in tune with the gameplay. Gorogoa is indeed short, which I think is a plus, since the puzzles never get overly complex so as to become frustrating. The art style and music could have, perhaps, been more unique, but even as it is, Gorogoa is definitely a must play for any puzzle lover and anyone who enjoys tight experiences dedicated to doing one thing right.

You've got to give props where props are due, and this game is undeniably original

You've got to give props where props are due, and this game is undeniably original. The art is fantastic and the transitions between pieces only amplifies it. My personal issue with Gorogoa is that it feels more like an interactive art piece than an actual puzzle game. 20% of the time you're solving jigsaw and logic based puzzles, and the other 80% is just clicking around the screen trying to get to that point. The "puzzles" start to feel like road blocks interfering with the interactive art, which wouldn't be a problem if I actually felt clever solving them. Instead, you just go through the motions of trial an error until something finally fits, a cool animation happens, and you repeat. I respect Gorogoa for being different. Plenty of games try to be more accessible, but leaning into one particular abstract concept can make a game shine so much brighter. No, it's not for everyone (myself included), but titles that embrace an original vision is what progress in this medium looks like. I would personally like to feel clever when progressing, but this game doesn't care about that, and is totally fine with leaving you in the dust in the name of creativity. If you're looking for an actual puzzler, I can't recommend this in good conscience, but I'm sure someone else would. Respect/10, my personal disappointment is probably someone else's top five

This game is art

This game is art. It doesn't take much of your time completing it but the hour you put in playing this game is worth more than a ton of other kind of investments in your life. Clear your calendar and sit in front your computer and click this game open. Sit back and enjoy the purity and creativity the developer has made for your soul. Edited/Added on: Perhaps to address the technical aspects more: The puzzle mechanics in this game are unique. That, in my opinion, makes up a lot to its rather short playhour. If you don't tend to judge a game's quality solely based on its duration, then this game is worth your time and money.
