Frustrating more than fun

Requires a third party account with Epic Games to play online with friends, even if you only play with people who are solely on the Steam platform. There is no indication anywhere on the Steam page that this was the case before purchasing and is definitely a shady, potentially illegal business practice. Considering that NONE of the previous titles ever required this, it boggles my mind as to why they thought this would fly, especially on a competitor platform. Edit: As of around 0600 (UTC -6), the Steam store front was updated (almost six hours after the game was officially released) to reflect the requirement of needing a third-party account.

Great ideas, rough execution

Requiring third party software for a game being run on a completely different client for the sake of "crossplay" is ridiculous. Give me an option to opt out of crossplay and only play with Steam players. Everything EPIC has done has been absolutely backpedaling on gamers and should be frowned upon by the gaming community. Unless we stop enabling companies from doing this by speaking with our wallets, they will keep doing it. Refunding. Edit: Oct 3 2024: Epic linking and launcher no longer required, bought the game to try it out, should the game do well, I will update the negative to a positive review. Oct 5 2024: After trying for two days of attempting to play online, it has been impossible. Lobbies don't load player information and after a short while it auto-disconnects you. If you try to run solo and other people try to join you and fail to connect, it doesn't let you start the game until they're forcefully disconnected. As of the two days I've tried to run this game in multiplayer, nobody has been able to join me and I haven't been able to join anyone else. Review stays negative.

Easy recommendation

This is not the first time this year that a B movie-inspired Steam game about shooting bugs added a third-party account requirement that wasn't previously necessary. In this case, it also happened to be an Epic account. Not Epic Games Store, mind you, but that was never going to go over well with Steam users. The requirement also wasn't disclosed until release day. If you came here wondering why reviews are "Mixed," there's your answer. On the bright side, it's less intrusive than you'd expect (though more than you'd hope), it isn't necessary for offline gameplay, and the developer claims to be looking into removing it. This doesn't seem to have been malicious; just painfully incompetent. As for the game itself? EDF 6 is the best EDF yet. If you liked any of the previous games, you'll like this one. If you haven't played any of the previous games, this is a great place to start. You'll get a little more out of the story if you've experienced EDF 5's story, but that's not a hard requirement. But one warning: if you played EDF 5 particularly recently, you might want to wait a bit before playing this. These are long games, and EDF 6 reuses a lot of assets and most of its systems from EDF 5. You're going to burn out if you play them back to back.
