About Blood West

. Weird West legends meet eldritch horror in BLOOD WEST, an immersive stealth FPS. Become the Undead Gunslinger, doomed to roam the barren lands until he finds the means to purge their curse and free his soul. No, this isn’t your typical Wild West desperado redemption arc. This is a damnation arc.. . . The Canyons, the Swamp, and the Mountains. Each swarming with abominable monsters and unholy demons, these are open-ended worlds for you to explore freely at your own pace. It will take the player over 20 hours on average to complete all three scenarios, and over 35 if they want to see everything the barren lands have to offer.. . . Blood West is a stealth FPS inspired by the genre classics such as the Thief series (whose fans will be happy to hear the voice of Stephen Russell, the actor voicing the master-thief Garrett, returning here as the protagonist), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, or - from the contemporary catalog - Hunt: Showdown. The gameplay rewards the careful approach: scouting the area, stalking your enemies, and striking from the shadows. Can you figure out a way to clear a fort full of ghouls and monsters without raising an alarm?. . . The Barren Lands present the player with

This is a fairly simple and really enjoyable game

This is a fairly simple and really enjoyable game. Explore at your own pace, pick apart locations for valuables and get some levels from enemies. It's surprising how there aren't many games that do this, or at least do it in a naturally fun way. Your levels don't award a health/damage buff to you, it's up to you to choose those among several other options. Treasures, HP restoration items and ammunition all feel great to find because of the game's difficulty. However It has a large focus on stealth and the game is tough if you ignore it, but unfortunately it provides you with a tool which allows you to lead enemies in any direction you want with no use limit; so there's no reason to plan movement or shot timings. This makes the game much too easy. Would have liked to have seen different difficulty choices where this wasn't available. The writing is pretty mediocre, the original voice of your Undead Cowboy at early launch was better than the Stephen Russel lines you get now. Also if you spend a few minutes with your eyes open in each location, money is never a problem so there's really need to manage purchases carefully at traders. There's a way to regenerate HP for free and a powerful weapon that uses HP as Ammunition so ammo generally becomes pointless. And it really does throw a lot of Ammunition at you, guns are mainline use weapons instead of problem solvers that you equip when things go wrong. Fairly obvious issues, but they don't ruin it. The experience is great, on the whole. Refreshing, simple fun.

Hard to put down

Do yourself a favor and play this game on a custom difficulty, with enemy damage at %200 and enemy health at %60-%70. This is the closest thing I've found to a single player version of Hunt: Showdown, so if you're into slow firing, heavy hitting weapons being used against swamp monsters and eldritch horrors, this is a game for you. Admittedly, the stealth isn't complex, the AI isn't that good, and a good chunk of exploration rewards nothing more than stuff you'll sell for currency. But behind all of that is a very fun shooter that you sorta have to work with to find the beauty for. Don't try to be super stealthy, don't try to use melee weapons for everything. Go in and start blasting fools away. Its a lot of fun and the more chaotic moments can often bring me back to the same feelings I found in Resident Evil 4 when I first played it. The game is far from perfect but theres a lot of charm here, and I don't regret my purchase at all. This said, Chapter 3 is a notable step down from the rest of the experience. Having multiple enemies for punishing you for engaging with them in combat is counterproductive to almost everything I enjoy most about the experience.
