EDIT: Make sure to add your game to your AV software in order to fix the error message that kick you out of your game. We shouldn't really have to do this, but that's the fix. I purchased this once on the windows store but I wanted it on steam due to windows store's chronic uselessness. It seems to be working without major issues so far. The UI is a bit dodgy with scaling (text overlap) and buttons flickering when hovering over them but nothing game breaking. Not had any crashes but I did have to make sure the game was allowed through windows defender or I got an error message that stopped me from playing until I allowed permissions. I am not a hardcore AoE player by any means, I play it a lot more casually. This means I can't speak much for balance and high level gameplay but I can praise the detailed tooltips and the updated graphics and animations really capture the feel of the old game and are very smooth. If you're like me and only played AoE 1 single player casually and wanted to recapture the game from your childhood then this is perfect for that. Will update if I encounter any game breaking issues. EDIT: So after a few more games I ran in to the old problem - the unit pathfinding is pretty bad, it's not the end of the world and it's exactly how the old game played but it would have been nice to see that improved and may put off some players. Units get stuck on each other all the time and it requires a bit of micro managing to separate them out a bit which gets a bit grating during longer play sessions. I still think the game is worth getting if you're a fan wanting to treat your nostalgia but don't expect much more than a visual overhaul and some UI improvements, it's a fine remaster but not a remake.
I am going to Convert you into playing Age of Empires Nostalgia: This was the first RTS game I played! The memories I had with this game when I was just a little kid. I can re-live them again and again What is unique here? You can Play MP with your friend to make the game even more enjoyable. Thank you for restoring the classic. The scenarios were breatheless and amazing The graphics look amazing and beautiful. You can even restore the old graphics if you want. Tons of Civilizations and empires from all walks of life (Not just Greece and Rome) Some of the Historical information does not always make sense? When did Persians use Elephant warriors (not that common actually) Fun for the whole family: Why? Bigdaddy, Bigmomma, Pow, ICBM. LOL remember these? They were codes that could use to summon special units. They do work. However, Don't you dare use them because that disables achievements! Also cheating is not right but still I am happy they put them there. Achievements work fine as well. There are no troll achievements like win 1000 MP matches Note: There are some crash issues However, that is not a problem. Steam gives you 14 days to request a refund if it is less than 2 hours. Still not interested? You still do not want to buy it? Well Let me bring in the Priests Woololo Wooloo Aioyo Aioyo Now you Buy Age of Empires 1 defenitive edition. Now you are converted into the Age of Empires Cult
For anyone wondering whether to buy this game wait a few months to see if the bugs are fixed. The crashes and errors are so bad I had to start the game three times to get the five minutes needed to write this review. And requires an internet connection to play? In 2019? We left archaic DRM in the past. Bad launches like this can kill a game, by the time it's fixed the fans that bought it will recall the bad taste they got at launch and everyone else won't care. Ironic that a developer for an Age of Empires game hasn't learned from history.
