Still thinking about it

An RTS? In this time of day, in this state of the industry, localised entirely on Steam? You'd better believe it! ACTUAL REVIEW I played the beta for around 10 hours, so you can add that to my total playtime. Ancestors Legacy is an RTS in the same style as Company of Heroes. You control squads of men, each with their own strengths and weaknesses and use combined arms tactics to win the day. There are a total of four factions: Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Germans and Slavs. Though they use a similar set up wrt to buildings and structure, each of their units play different enough to make them unique. There's a fairly lengthy single player campaign, comprising of several smaller campaigns. There's a tutorial Viking campaign, a proper Viking campaign, two Anglo Saxon campaigns, a German and a Slav campaign. The design of the menu suggests that more campaigns will be forthcoming. Base building is largely simplified, but this doesn't really concern much as you never really did much base building in CoH anyway beyond put your barracks at the edge of your base so the first rifle squad would get out and start capping things faster faster. Multiplayer is very functional and has stat tracking, ranks, all the things you'd expect of a serious campaign and also a server browser for more relaxed games for those who want to play online but aren't so competitive. The only bad things I have to say about it are that there aren't many Skirmish maps in the game, but this is something that will be rectified in the future, when modding/a map editor/more content is released for the game.

In short, it's like Company Of Heroes (but far worse) set in the Dark Ages

In short, it's like Company Of Heroes (but far worse) set in the Dark Ages. The game starts off interesting in the first few levels but by the 4th/5th level onwards, every level is the same (with a few minor twists or variations). Cap the control points (villages) harvest resources, upgrade units, wipe out enemy, job done. "He who controls the spice, controls the Universe". Simply keep your units alive (by knowing when to retreat), upgrade them so they are more powerful than your enemy, split your army to protect the CP's nearest your enemy and once you have a bunch of upgraded tier 3 units wipe out the enemy and their base. Fail to keep your units alive to be able to upgrade them, then every level just turns into war of attrition slogfest. Also this game contains one of my biggest pet peeves, AI that cheats, even on normal/easy. No matter what, the game will just spawn what it wants when it wants and it just serves just to drag out missions. Almost as bad, your own archers will harm your own units when firing into combat, as they should, the AI however does not and is immune to it's own friendly fire. Achievements aren't hard, the multiplayer achievements can be cheesed against bots (MP can be played 3v1 so even against the hardest AI you can just overwhelm them with friendly AI on your side), the single player ones are just time consuming. Overall starts good, by the 2nd or 3rd mission in the second chapter, you'll be bored. As for performance, beware the game is not multicore optimised, the game just used one core of my 5700x and it was constantly boosting to 4650mhz, overall CPU use was low <15%, but temps/fan noise were more akin to an all core gaming load.

As you can see on my profile...ive got 700+ hours into Company of Heroes 2

As you can see on my profile...ive got 700+ hours into Company of Heroes 2. (COH2) I simply love these type of Capture/strategy games. That said, Ancestors Legacy (AL) perfectly sratches that itch. basicly you take over points on the map which you then reinforce eiher with infantry or structures and then you move on to the next point. (like a classic Capture the flag style) I don`t know what to say, the game feels decently balanced. You can really create a playstyle. The little combat that happends when units clash is just fantastic. I know nobody will read this review so imma just end it here. Recommend !! 9/10 PS> It does have a few bugs which crash your game. I just got kicked out of a 1+ hour skirmish and...yeah...that kinda pissed me off a little. Other than that, good game !
